When did you attend Harlaxton?

Fall 1999 (my sophomore year).

Did you have any unique experiences during your time at Harlaxton?

As an education major, I had an internship at a high school in Grantham. The differences between the educational systems were very interesting to observe and study. Although I was a music education major, I was assigned the physical education class on my first day at the school. The teacher assumed I must be a very good basketball player since I was from the United States, and he wanted me to teach the unit on basketball. I was reluctant to volunteer, because I assumed the high school students would be better at basketball than me. It turned out that the students did not know much about basketball, and my limited skills exceeded theirs.

Does Harlaxton still feel like a second home? Have you returned since studying abroad?

I have not returned but often think of my experiences there. At some point, I would like to visit Harlaxton again.

Do you have a favorite trip from your time at Harlaxton?

The group trip to Italy at the end of the semester was a highlight. We visited Rome, Florence, and Venice. There is so much history in those three cities. As a Catholic, I really appreciated visiting the Vatican and seeing Pope John II.

Did your time at Harlaxton have any influence on your future? Was it a life-changing experience?

As I reflect back on my time at Harlaxton, I think that semester really developed my independence. We traveled almost every weekend to new places, and we had to navigate new languages, cultures, transportation, and social norms.
