What made you choose to study at Harlaxton?

When I came to the University of Evansville, I knew that I wanted to go to Harlaxton College because it would give me the opportunity to become more well-rounded and culturally immersed. Also, living in an English manor and traveling the world sounded like an incredible experience.

Did you have a life-changing experience during your time at Harlaxton?

First and foremost, I had the opportunity to build a house in Portugal with Habitat for Humanity while I was abroad. Being enveloped in Portuguese culture while helping a disadvantaged family was an experience that only Harlaxton could have given me. Assisting on a house build inspired me to come back to the United States and plan and execute the nation’s first Habitat for Humanity Barn Blitz alongside Holly Carter, who happens to be the director of Harlaxton College Programs.

Before I left for Harlaxton, I was afraid of going abroad. My mind was consumed with anxiety and what-if scenarios. Instead of being crippled by fear, I decided to walk onto the plane that would take me across the Atlantic Ocean. Upon arriving at Harlaxton Manor, the staff welcomed me with open arms. I began studying, and I traveled to nine different countries during my time there. After going to Harlaxton College, I am more confident in my adaptability regarding new situations. For example, a year later I moved to Washington, DC, for the summer to complete a biomedical research internship at the National Institutes of Health. Without Harlaxton, I am not sure that I would have had the confidence to fly to DC alone and to live there by myself for an entire summer. I am incredibly thankful for all of the life-changing experiences I had at Harlaxton College.

Based on your experience, what makes the Harlaxton program unique?

The Harlaxton program is unique because students participate in on-site learning. Not only does Harlaxton Manor have its own place in history, but the British professors take students to various historical locations throughout the United Kingdom. Students can then apply what they learn in the classroom to real-life examples.

How has the manor become your second home?

There were so many nights at Harlaxton where I thought to myself, “this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” I have fond memories of listening to music in the Bistro, exploring the Harlaxton College grounds, laughing and drinking hot chocolate with friends in the refectory, and watching the sun fade behind the English countryside. Those fond memories live on and replay daily. Those memories and the experiences I shared with my peers at Harlaxton College make that beautiful manor my second home. I cannot wait to revisit my Castle on the Hill.

What advice do you have for future Harlaxton students?

Robin Williams once said, “Carpe Diem, Seize the day, Make your lives extraordinary.” Attending Harlaxton College will make your life extraordinary. Seize the day and travel as much as you can. Immerse yourself in British culture and become well-rounded. You will never get this opportunity again, so savor every second of this experience. It truly is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Enjoy!
