Live Every Day to the Fullest

“Explore the world and follow your heart, because you never know when you’re going to get the chance to do so again.”

Lex (Alexis) Sorrell

Major: Civil Engineering

What made you choose to study at Harlaxton?

My friends wanted to travel Europe and convinced me to want to travel with them. So I signed up and we traveled together and immersed ourselves in completely different cultures. It was the best decision I’ve ever made.

Did you have a life-changing experience during your time at Harlaxton?

When I was at Harlaxton, the Paris attacks happened. A bunch of my friends were in Paris, and it made me realize how short and precious life is and that we should never take this gift for granted and to live every day to the fullest.

Based on your experience, what makes the Harlaxton program unique?

The Harlaxton program is so unique because a lot of students live together and disperse to travel to different locations every weekend, and then they come back to the manor to share their individual magical experiences with each other and give travel advice. So this magical experience from every individual point of view is shared all the time with the Harlaxton family. It’s amazing.

How has the manor become your second home?

The manor became my second home because no matter where I went in Europe, I always ended up taking that same train ride and cab ride home from the airport to Grantham, to turn that corner and see the beautiful entrance to the manor. And I would always look forward to breakfast, lunch, or dinner with that Harlaxton family and to share our experiences and new discoveries from that weekend. And sometimes when travel plans would be unexpectedly extended (like a flight from Bergen, Norway, being delayed six hours) you wouldn’t be alone because somewhere else in Europe, one of your fellow Harlaxton students would be experiencing the same thing; you’d end up sharing the same cab from Grantham train station to the manor, only to share your stories on your way home.

What advice do you have for future Harlaxton students?

Live every moment like it’s your last because you never know when it will be your last. Smile and enjoy your fellow classmates because you never know when you’re going to see them again. Explore the world and follow your heart because you never know when you’re going to get the chance to do so again.
