The Ridgway Scholarship

US Flag The Ridgway Scholarship offers an opportunity for a student who is normally resident in LINCOLNSHIRE or HUNTINGDONSHIRE (before the boundary changes of 1974) to study for an academic year at the University of Evansville in the United States of America.

The scholarship is usually most attractive to those students completing their last year of secondary education and looking for a 'gap-year' opportunity to study and travel in the USA; although all applications from anyone in full-time secondary (final year) or tertiary education will be considered.

The Ridgway Scholarship pays international air fare, all tuition costs and  room and board accommodation for a year of study at the University of Evansville in Indiana, USA.  As a major international scholarship, the grant offsets educational costs of more than $40,000.

The Ridgway Scholarship is a gift of Dr. William Ridgway, a Trustee of the University of Evansville whose ancestors are from this region of England. Dr. Ridgway also purchased the leased Harlaxton Manor in the 1980s and gave it outright to the University, who had conducted Harlaxton College since 1970.

Alice Braybrook has recently been appointed as the Ridgway Scholar for 2012-2013.  Alice was selected through a competitive application and interview process and was one of three finalists interviewed at Harlaxton Manor on Wednesday, 7 March, by a panel of drawn from present and former members of the College. Members of the interview panel were Dr. Edward Bujak of the Harlaxton faculty, Mrs. Jan Beckett, former Librarian of Harlaxton College and still maintaining strong links with the College, and Mrs. Linda Dawes, the present College Librarian.

Alice lives in Spalding and is currently Head Girl at Spalding High School, where she is studying for her ‘A’ level examinations in History, Government and Politics, Geography and General Studies.

In announcing the scholarship, Dr. J. Gordon Kingsley, Principal of Harlaxton College, paid tribute to Alice’s academic achievements, her genuine academic curiosity and also her involvement in wider school life.  "We are confident that Alice, during her year as Ridgway Scholar at Evansville, will be a wonderful ambassador for Lincolnshire and Britain, and that she will make the best possible use of the opportunities provided for personal growth and development " said Dr. Kingsley.
