Cultural Immersion
Most students who go abroad are seeking some form of “cultural immersion”—they want to get to know local people and something about local cultures. This is not easy in a short time, but Harlaxton gives you these opportunities.
We begin with the fact that you are living in—it is your home—one of the great manor houses of England. Not visiting, but living in it! And you are in the beautiful England of villages and market towns and gardens, a truly “green and pleasant land,” yet only an hour by train from the pulsating streets and lanes of London.
Most staff and core faculty are British. British families “adopt” you, if you choose, for meals and special outings in their homes. We go to local churches, play against British sports teams (including the British “air force academy,” RAF Cranwell), shop in a British market town, meet British business and professional people, go on field trips to castles and cathedrals and galleries and Roman/Medieval archeological wonders, go to some of the best theatre and concert performances in the world—it’s all in English(!), and travel to the most interesting parts of Britain and Europe. Opportunities in the community (e.g. with Scouts and Guides, hospices, youth programs), and involvement with local interest groups (e.g. English horseback riding, English choirs, English pantomime, cricket, pubs) round out the possibilities.
